Chapter 1 — The Lighthouse on the Hill

The town of Seabrook always smelled like warm salt and sunshine. Even on cloudy days, the ocean air drifted through the streets like a friendly visitor, slipping past open windows and dancing through the tall grass on the hill.

And at the very top of that hill stood the old lighthouse.

It hadn’t shone its light in many years, but everyone in town still called it The Little Lighthouse, as if it were a friend who had grown quiet. Its white paint was chipped, its red roof faded, and its wooden door leaned slightly to one side, as if it were tired from standing watch for so long.

But to four kids in Seabrook, the lighthouse wasn’t old or forgotten at all.

It was a mystery waiting to happen.

Sam was the first to reach the hill that afternoon, his shoes kicking up dust as he ran. Ellie followed close behind, careful but curious, her long brown hair blowing across her face. Benji arrived next, breathing hard, clutching his backpack like it held something important. And Rosa came last, quiet and thoughtful, her eyes always noticing things the others missed.

They stood together at the bottom of the hill, looking up at the lighthouse.

“Race you to the top!” Sam shouted.

“No fair, you already started!” Benji complained, but he ran anyway.

Ellie laughed and followed. Rosa shook her head, smiling softly, and walked at her own pace.

When they reached the lighthouse door, Sam pressed his hand against the old wood.

“It’s locked,” he said. “It’s always locked.”

Ellie stepped closer. “Maybe it’s not locked today.”

Benji frowned. “Why would it be unlocked today?”

Rosa looked up at the sky. The wind was picking up, swirling around them, tugging at their shirts and hair.

“Because,” she said quietly, “sometimes God opens doors when you’re not expecting it.”

Just then, a sudden gust of wind rushed across the hill.

The lighthouse door creaked… groaned… and slowly swung open.

The four kids froze.

Sam whispered, “Did you see that?”

Ellie nodded. “I think… I think we’re supposed to go inside.”

Rosa stepped forward first.

Benji swallowed hard.

And together, the Lighthouse Kids crossed the threshold into a place that would change their lives forever.
